The Bible is called the Word of God because Christians believe that God inspired its Scriptures to communicate His truth and purposes. Through Scripture, we learn about God’s character, His dealings with humanity, and His plan of salvation through Jesus Christ.
However, we must remember that the Bible also records the words of people who were mistaken or speaking against God’s will. We must read each passage carefully to understand what God is teaching through it.
What Does the Bible Say?
John 17:17 (KJV)
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
Jesus spoke these words while praying to His Father for His disciples. He emphasized the importance of God’s truth in their lives.
2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
This verse teaches us that Scripture is useful for teaching, correction, and instruction in righteous living.
Example
In Genesis 3:4, the serpent told Eve, “Ye shall not surely die.” The Bible records those words, but it does not mean God approved of the serpent’s statement. The passage records the deception that took place.
This teaches us to distinguish between words recorded in the Bible and the message the passage actually communicates.
Remember
Study the Bible carefully. Ask who is speaking, what is being said, and whether the passage presents those words as true, false, or part of a particular event.
