As you study the Bible, you may discover that some things you believed were based on tradition, someone else’s explanation, or a misunderstanding of Scripture.
Do not be afraid to examine your beliefs. Our purpose in studying the Bible is not to defend everything we have heard, but to understand what God’s Word actually teaches.
Be willing to ask questions, examine the Scriptures, and correct your understanding when necessary.
What Does the Bible Say?
Proverbs 18:13 (KJV)
“He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.”
This verse warns us against reaching conclusions before we have properly heard or understood a matter.
Acts 17:11 (KJV)
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
The Bereans examined the Scriptures to determine whether the teaching they heard was true. We should develop the same willingness to learn and examine God’s Word.
Example
Suppose you have believed a particular teaching for many years. One day, you read the passage carefully and discover that its context does not support what you were taught.
Will you reject what you have discovered simply because it challenges your previous understanding, or will you examine the Scriptures honestly?
Growing in understanding requires humility and a willingness to learn.
Remember
Do not be afraid to examine your beliefs. Let us study the Scriptures carefully, understand their context, and be willing to correct our understanding when the Word reveals that we have misunderstood it.
