The Bible has many human authors, but Scripture teaches that its message came through the inspiration and work of God. Understanding this helps us appreciate both God’s role in giving His Word and the people He used to write it.
1. God Is the Source of Scripture
The Bible was written by human beings, but it does not present its message as merely the product of human imagination or personal opinion. Scripture teaches that God worked through human authors to communicate His Word.
2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
The phrase given by inspiration of God points to the divine source of Scripture. God used human authors, but Scripture identifies Him as the source of its inspiration.
2. Human Authors Were Carried Along by the Holy Ghost
God did not simply leave the writing of Scripture to human wisdom alone. The Bible describes the Holy Ghost’s role in the giving of prophecy.
2 Peter 1:20–21 (KJV)
“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
These verses emphasize that biblical prophecy did not originate merely from human will. The Holy Ghost worked through the people who spoke God’s message.
3. Different Authors, One Divine Source
The Bible contains writings associated with different people, including Moses, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Matthew, Luke, John, Paul, and Peter.
These authors wrote in different historical circumstances and used different forms of writing. Some passages contain history, others poetry, prophecy, letters, or accounts of events.
Recognizing these differences helps us read each passage according to its purpose while respecting Scripture’s claim of divine inspiration.
Practical Example
Imagine receiving several letters written by different messengers on behalf of one person. Each messenger may have a different handwriting style and way of expressing things, but the messages may still communicate the intentions of the person who sent them.
In a similar way, the Bible contains different human authors and writing styles. We should pay attention to each author’s words and context while recognizing Scripture’s teaching about God’s inspiration.
This illustration is only an aid to understanding; it does not mean biblical authors were merely copying dictated messages.
Remember
The Bible has human authors, but Scripture teaches that it is given by inspiration of God. To understand it properly, we must consider both the human authors and the divine source Scripture declares for its message.
