When you begin studying the Bible, do not rush to finish many chapters without understanding what you read. Take time to examine the passage, identify who is speaking, and understand the message.

A good place for beginners to start is the Gospel of John, which introduces Jesus Christ, His works, His teachings, and His identity.

As you read, ask yourself: What does this passage say? Who is speaking? Who is being addressed? What happened before and after this passage? What is the writer teaching?

What Does the Bible Say?

Acts 17:11 (KJV)

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

The Bereans listened eagerly and examined the Scriptures daily to see whether the teaching they received was true.

Example

Suppose you read a verse that seems to promise something to every believer. Before making that conclusion, read the whole paragraph and consider whom the writer was addressing and what was happening.

This simple habit can help you avoid misunderstandings and grow in your knowledge of Scripture.

Remember

Read prayerfully, study carefully, examine the context, and be willing to learn. The goal is not merely to read the Bible, but to understand its message faithfully.
