Explanation

Yes. Many ancient religious writings have survived, including writings from Jewish and early Christian communities. However, not every ancient religious writing was included in the Bible.

The biblical books were received and recognized as Scripture through a historical process that took place over time. Christians have not always agreed on every book included in the Old Testament, which is why different Christian traditions have different biblical canons.

The King James Version used in this course contains 66 books. Other Christian traditions include additional books in their Old Testament collections. These differences should be understood accurately rather than dismissed without examination.

Some ancient writings provide valuable historical information, but a writing being old or religious does not automatically mean it belongs to the biblical canon or carries the same authority as Scripture.

Scripture 1: Luke 1:1–2 (KJV)

“Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;”

Explanation: Luke acknowledges that others had written accounts concerning events believed among the early Christians. He then explains his own purpose in writing an orderly account. This shows that other writings existed, but it does not mean that every account was accepted as Scripture.

Scripture 2: 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV)

“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”

Explanation: Paul encourages believers to examine things carefully and hold on to what is good. This principle reminds us not to accept a writing or teaching merely because someone claims it is ancient or sacred.

Practical Example

Imagine finding an old religious book in a library. Its age may make it historically interesting, but age alone does not establish that its contents are Scripture.

We should ask what the book is, who wrote it if known, when it was written, how it was received by religious communities, and how it relates to the biblical writings.
