Welcome to SVI Community Bible Discussions!

In some Christian gatherings, people pray by declaring that they are beating Satan, burning him with fire, or destroying demonic powers through fire. Others ask whether these expressions are taught in the New Testament or have become religious practices passed from one church tradition to another.

The Bible teaches believers to resist the devil, stand against spiritual evil, and remain strong in the Lord. But what instructions did Jesus and the apostles give us about spiritual warfare?

      James 4:7 (KJV)

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

      Ephesians 6:11 (KJV)

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

      2 Corinthians 10:3–4 (KJV)

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)”

Let us discuss: What does the Bible mean when it tells believers to resist the devil? Where in the New Testament are Christians instructed to beat Satan or burn him with fire in prayer? What passages are used to support these practices? How should we distinguish biblical spiritual warfare from expressions that may come from church traditions or personal interpretations?

Share your thoughts and support your answers with Scripture. Let us examine the Word in context and discuss our differences respectfully, seeking to understand what God has actually instructed believers to do.
