Annet Birungi PetchKeymasterDiscussion:
In some communities, people perform traditional rituals before moving into a new house, using a newly purchased car, opening a business, or beginning an important project. These practices may include pouring libations, offering sacrifices, consulting spiritualists, invoking ancestral spirits, or performing ceremonies intended to prevent misfortune.
Some people believe these rituals bring protection, prosperity, and success. Others believe that Christians should pray, give thanks to God, and trust Him without depending on such practices.
Discussion Questions
Does the Bible require Christians to perform traditional rituals before using a new house, car, or business? Is there a difference between dedicating something to God through prayer and performing a ritual believed to control spiritual forces? What does the finished work of Jesus Christ teach us about approaching God for protection and blessing? How should Christians respond when relatives or community members pressure them to perform rituals that conflict with their faith? How can Christians begin new projects with prayer, thanksgiving, wisdom, and responsible planning without living in fear of curses or misfortune?
Key Scriptures to Consider (KJV)
Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all your ways.
Colossians 3:17: “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
Hebrews 10:14: “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”
Philippians 4:6: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
Let us examine these practices through Scripture and in context. Christians can thank God for a new home, car, or business and pray for wisdom and protection. The important question is whether a practice expresses faith in God or places trust in rituals, spiritual powers, or fear-based traditions. Let us discuss respectfully and allow God’s Word to guide us.
