Annet Birungi PetchKeymasterDiscussion:
In many cultures, couples and their families participate in traditional ceremonies before marriage. Some practices involve family introductions, exchanging gifts, paying bride price, or seeking blessings from elders. Other practices may involve rituals, sacrifices, consulting spiritual mediums, or invoking ancestral spirits.
Some Christians participate in these traditions because they consider them part of their cultural identity, while others question whether certain practices agree with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Discussion Questions
Which traditional practices before marriage are compatible with Christian faith, and which may conflict with biblical teaching? Is there a difference between honoring one’s culture and participating in a spiritual ritual that contradicts God’s Word? What does the Bible teach about marriage, family honor, and becoming one in Christ? How should a Christian respond when family members insist on participating in a traditional practice that violates their biblical convictions? Can Christians preserve good cultural customs while rejecting practices that contradict their faith in Jesus Christ?
Key Scriptures to Consider (KJV)
1 Corinthians 10:20–21 — Paul warns believers against participating in fellowship with devils and the table of the Lord together.
1 Thessalonians 5:21–22: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
Ephesians 6:2: “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)”
Genesis 2:24: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Let us discuss this subject with respect for different cultures and families. The purpose is not to condemn cultural identity but to examine every practice in the light of God’s Word, keeping what is good and refusing anything that contradicts our faith in Christ.
