Annet Birungi PetchKeymasterDiscussion:
When people experience sickness, family problems, financial difficulties, repeated misfortunes, or unexplained events, some seek help from traditional healers, diviners, spiritualists, or people who claim to communicate with ancestral spirits.
Some people believe these practices reveal hidden causes of problems or provide spiritual protection. Others believe Christians should seek God through prayer, Scripture, and appropriate practical help.
Discussion Questions
Does the Bible permit Christians to seek guidance from diviners, mediums, or people who claim to communicate with the dead? What is the biblical difference between seeking medical treatment and seeking spiritual guidance from a medium or diviner? How should Christians respond when someone tells them that their problems are caused by ancestral spirits, curses, or witchcraft? Does every sickness, financial struggle, or family problem mean that someone has placed a curse on us? How can Christians help people who are afraid of spiritual attacks without increasing their fear or condemning them?
Key Scriptures to Consider (KJV)
Deuteronomy 18:10–12 — God warns Israel against divination, sorcery, and consulting familiar spirits.
Isaiah 8:19: “And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?”
1 Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
2 Timothy 3:16: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
James 5:14 — James instructs the sick to call for the elders of the church to pray over them.
Let us discuss this subject with wisdom and compassion. Scripture warns against seeking spiritual guidance through mediums and divination, but we should not assume that every difficulty is caused by witchcraft or a curse. Christians can pray, study God’s Word, seek mature pastoral counsel, and obtain appropriate medical or professional assistance when needed. Our confidence should rest in Christ rather than fear.
