Series 2: Church Practices and Traditions — Discussion 11
Bible Scripture (KJV)
Matthew 6:7 (KJV): “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”
1 Kings 18:26 (KJV): “And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.”
Let us discuss:
Does the Bible teach that prayer must involve shouting, loud noises, or repeated words for God to hear us? What is the difference between praying loudly from the heart and believing that loudness makes prayer more powerful? Can Christians pray quietly as well as loudly, according to their circumstances and the leading of the Holy Spirit?
Let us examine the Scriptures in context. The question is not whether shouting is always wrong, but whether it is a biblical requirement for effective prayer.
