Should Christians Make Vows to God?

Series 2: Church Practices and Traditions — Discussion 36

      Bible Scripture (KJV)

Matthew 5:37 (KJV): “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”

Ecclesiastes 5:5 (KJV): “Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.”

      Let us discuss:

Does the Bible require Christians to make vows or special promises to God to receive blessings? What is the difference between making a vow voluntarily and feeling pressured to promise God something in exchange for a miracle? How should Christians respond when they have made promises to God out of fear or desperation?

Let us examine these Scriptures in context and share our understanding respectfully, allowing God’s Word to guide our decisions.
