1. What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
When we believe in Jesus Christ, the Bible describes our salvation as being born again. This is not a second physical birth. It is a spiritual birth that comes through God’s work in us.
Jesus explained this truth when He spoke with Nicodemus, a religious leader who wanted to understand His teaching.
John 3:3 (KJV)
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus initially struggled to understand how a person could be born again. Jesus was speaking about a spiritual birth, not returning to the mother’s womb.
Being born again means that our salvation involves more than changing our outward behaviour. God brings us into new spiritual life through Jesus Christ.
2. We Are Born of the Spirit
John 3:5–6 (KJV)
“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Jesus distinguishes physical birth from spiritual birth. Christians interpret the phrase “born of water and of the Spirit” in different ways, so we should be careful not to claim that every detail has only one agreed interpretation.
The central point is clear: natural birth alone is not the spiritual birth Jesus describes. We need the work of God’s Spirit.
We cannot produce this new spiritual life simply by trying harder, following religious traditions, or improving our outward appearance. Our new life depends on God’s work through Christ.
3. In Christ, We Become a New Creation
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Paul teaches that the person who is in Christ is a new creation. Through Jesus, we receive a new standing before God and a new life in Him.
This does not mean that a believer immediately becomes perfect in every thought, habit, or action. Christians still need to grow in understanding and learn to live according to God’s Word.
However, our identity is no longer defined only by our past failures. We can learn to understand ourselves in the light of what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ.
4. We Become God’s Children Through Faith in Christ
John 1:12 (KJV)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
This verse explains that those who receive Christ and believe in His name are given the right to become God’s children.
Our relationship with God is not established by our family background, nationality, education, wealth, or religious reputation. It is through Jesus Christ that we receive this new relationship with God.
This truth gives believers a foundation for their identity. They belong to God through Christ and can grow in understanding what it means to live as His children.
5. Practical Example
Imagine someone who has believed in Jesus but continues to think, “My past is so bad that God can never accept me. I will always be the same person I used to be.”
This person needs to understand what the Bible says about the new creation.
The Gospel does not teach us to deny our past or pretend that we never made mistakes. It teaches us that our past does not have to define our identity in Christ.
As believers learn God’s Word, they can renew their thinking, turn away from harmful behaviours, and grow in the character of Christ.
Spiritual growth takes place as we learn to live out the new life God has given us.
