1. Eternal Life Is Received, Not Earned
One of the most important truths in the Gospel is that eternal life is a gift from God. We cannot earn it through good works, religious activities, giving money, or trying to become perfect through our own strength.
God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ, and we receive His gift by believing in Him.
Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
These verses teach us that salvation comes by God’s grace and is received through faith. Grace means that God provides what we could not obtain through our own efforts.
Faith is not a payment we give God. It is our trust in Him and in what He has accomplished through Jesus Christ.
2. What Does It Mean to Believe in Jesus?
Believing in Jesus means more than knowing that He existed. It means trusting Him as the Son of God and believing the Gospel concerning His death and resurrection.
John 3:16 (KJV)
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Notice the promise: whoever believes in Jesus Christ receives everlasting life.
We do not place our confidence in our own goodness. We place our confidence in Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us.
Romans 10:9 (KJV)
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Paul directs attention to believing in the risen Lord Jesus Christ and confessing Him as Lord. Our confidence rests in the Saviour and the Gospel, not in repeating words as though they were a formula that earns salvation.
3. We Receive Salvation Through the Gospel
Ephesians 1:13 (KJV)
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,”
This verse describes an important sequence: hearing the word of truth, believing the Gospel, and being sealed with the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel tells us what God has done through Jesus Christ. When we hear and believe this message, we put our trust in Him.
This is why teaching the Gospel accurately matters. People need to understand what Jesus accomplished, rather than being led to believe that salvation depends on human achievements.
4. Good Works Are the Fruit, Not the Price, of Salvation
Does receiving salvation by grace mean that our actions no longer matter? No.
The Bible teaches that we are not saved by our good works, but God’s grace changes how we live.
Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Notice that verse 10 follows verses 8 and 9. We are saved by grace through faith, not by works; yet we are created in Christ Jesus for good works.
Good works are not the price we pay to receive eternal life. They are part of the new life God calls us to live.
We grow in love, kindness, forgiveness, honesty, and obedience as we learn to follow Christ.
5. Practical Example
Imagine two people.
The first person believes, “If I give enough money, help enough people, and attend church regularly, God will owe me eternal life.”
The second person understands, “God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ. I receive His gift by faith, and because of His grace, I want my life to reflect His love.”
The second person understands the relationship between grace and good works more clearly. We do not obey God to purchase His gift; we learn to obey Him because we have received His grace.
6. Remember
