1. Understanding Eternal Life

Eternal life is more than living forever. It is the life God gives us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Through believing in Jesus, we receive eternal life and begin a relationship with God.

The Greek word Zōē (ζωή) means life. In the New Testament, it is often used when speaking about the life God gives through Jesus Christ.

Jesus did not come merely to improve our earthly circumstances. He came to reconcile us to God and give us eternal life. Although God cares about our daily needs, the central message of the Gospel is what He has accomplished for us through His Son.

2. What Does the Bible Say?

John 17:3 (KJV)

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

Jesus explains eternal life in terms of knowing God and Jesus Christ, whom He sent. Eternal life is not simply a future hope; it is a present gift for those who believe in Christ.

1 John 5:11–12 (KJV)

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”

Notice that the Scripture says God hath given us eternal life. Eternal life is God’s gift, found in His Son, Jesus Christ.

3. Why Did Jesus Come?

John 10:10 (KJV)

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Jesus came to give life abundantly. In this context, He contrasts Himself, the Good Shepherd, with the thief who harms the sheep. His words point us to the life, care, and salvation He provides.

Our understanding of Jesus should not be based only on what we hope to receive materially. The greatest gift is Christ Himself and the eternal life we have through Him.

4. Practical Example

Imagine someone begins following Jesus because they want a job, financial success, healing, or a solution to a difficult situation.

God cares about our needs, and we can bring our requests to Him in prayer. However, if that person believes that Jesus is valuable only when their circumstances improve, they may struggle when life becomes difficult.

As we learn about eternal life, we discover that our relationship with God is not measured only by our earthly circumstances. Through Jesus Christ, we receive God’s gift of life and can continue trusting Him through both joyful and difficult seasons.

5. Remember

  • Eternal life is God’s gift through Jesus Christ.

  • Eternal life is more than living forever; it includes knowing God through His Son.

  • Eternal life is a present possession for those who believe in Jesus.

  • We should seek to know Christ, not only what we hope to receive from Him.

  • Our earthly circumstances do not determine the value of God’s gift of eternal life.

Key Scripture to Remember: John 17:3.

Eternal life is found in knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom He sent.
