Annet Birungi PetchKeymasterDiscussion:
In some cultures, people believe that deceased family members continue to watch over the living and can influence their protection, prosperity, marriages, or family affairs. Some people offer gifts or sacrifices to ancestors, speak to the dead, or ask deceased relatives to intervene when they face difficulties.
Other people believe that Christians should direct their prayers to God through Jesus Christ and trust Him rather than seek spiritual help from the dead.
Discussion Questions
Does the Bible teach Christians to pray to deceased relatives or ask ancestors for protection and blessings? What does Scripture teach about the relationship between the living and the dead? Is honoring the memory of deceased parents and grandparents the same as worshipping them or seeking spiritual help from them? How should Christians respond when family members insist that they must perform ancestral rituals to receive protection or avoid misfortune? How can Christians respect their cultural heritage and remember their loved ones without participating in practices that conflict with their biblical convictions?
Key Scriptures to Consider (KJV)
1 Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
Deuteronomy 18:11–12 — God warns Israel against consulting the dead and practising divination.
Ecclesiastes 9:5 — This passage describes the dead as having no further share in the activities taking place under the sun.
Hebrews 9:27: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Let us examine these passages carefully and respectfully. Remembering deceased loved ones, preserving family history, and honouring their good example are different from praying to them or treating them as spiritual mediators. Our aim is to understand what Scripture teaches and to encourage believers to put their confidence in God through Jesus Christ.
