Some Christians keep anointing oil in their homes, believing it protects their families, drives away evil, or prevents spiritual attacks. Others use oil during prayer without believing that the oil itself has special power.
What does the Bible teach us about anointing oil, and should Christians treat it as a form of spiritual security?
Scripture:
James 5:14 (KJV)
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:”
Psalm 121:7–8 (KJV)
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
These passages invite us to consider the biblical use of oil and the source of our confidence in God’s protection. James mentions oil in connection with prayer for the sick, while the Psalm directs our attention to the Lord as our keeper.
Questions for Discussion
Does James 5:14 teach that anointing oil has protective power, or does it describe a practice connected with prayer and care for the sick? Is it wrong for Christians to keep anointing oil at home, or does the issue depend on what they believe about it? How can we distinguish between using oil as part of a prayer practice and trusting an object as though it has power in itself?
Let us study the Scriptures in context and share our understanding respectfully, without condemning one another.
